Kendall Causeway About to Give Way
2009-05-11
Only the weatherman can say if the weekend’s heavy rains signal an early start to the rainy season. In the south though, there’s not much question about it. 7News has confirmed reports that the Sittee River is swollen and about to go over the low lying Kendall Causeway. Heavy rains in the south over the weekend have seen a sharp rise in the river’s level. When the causeway is cut-off, it causes a major disruption to business as usual in a third of the country and oil exports.
Residents and business owners lament that they are about to face a new hurricane season and still have not gotten a replacement for the Kendall Bridge which was destroyed in last year’s historic and tragic floods. The U.S. military bridge that was to have replaced it for the medium term turned out to have been the wrong size.
